Aug. 5, 1812
Historical Marker
An early 'skirmish' in the War of 1812, Tecumseh's forces were outnumbered 8 to 1 by the US Military and escaped with a single casualty. Major Thomas Van Horne and 200 U.S. soldiers were en route south to pick up supplies for Fort Detroit when they were attacked by Tecumseh and 2 dozen warriors including Wyandot leader Stayeghtha or Roundhead. Van Horne called for retreat and his forces panicked leaving 18 killed, 12 wounded, and 70 missing. They also captured the mail being carried by Van Horne which revealed American weakness at Fort Detroit which would be sieged and successfully taken shortly thereafter.
