Kanak rebellion begins
June 25, 1878
WCH:On 25 June 1878, the Kanak rebellion in New Caledonia began when Indigenous Melanesian warriors killed four colonial French policeman, as well as most European settlers in the La Foa region. The resistance escalated and attacks spread, and the French army aggressively began to crush the movement. They eventually succeeded by December, having killed up to 5% of the Kanak population, with many chiefs executed without trial and many tribes deported to different islands, although the colonisation project was nearly halted for 20 years.
