Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, French explorer and 26 crew killed by Māori
June 12, 1772
"Mort de Marc-Joseph Marion Dufresne dans la baie des Îles" - détail" 19th century Charles Meryon
The killings by members of Ngare Raumati occurred after Marion and his party had stayed more than five weeks. It is likely the French explorers were killed after fishing in a place which had a ban on it. Accounts of the killings were discussed widely in Europe and changed the perception of Aotearoa away from a place for colonization for some time. Particularly in France, New Zealand was considered not a place to colonize.
