About 100 Chiricahua Apache warriors led by Cochise attacked a small group of soldiers killing them and taking their large herd of cattle and horses. Although only one small Apache victory among many, it is historically notable because the soldiers killed were Confederate soldiers. This is the farthest west battle death of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War era, although this interaction was, of course, a part of the Apache Wars.
