On 28 September 1907, socialist revolutionary and anti-colonialist Bhagat Singh was born in what is now Pakistan.
Later, he assassinated a British police officer, and bombed the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi. An advocate of a mass working class uprising, he criticised Mohandas Gandhi for the latter's fear of the working class.
Singh was executed by the British in 1931, and became a popular folk hero after his death.
On a leaflet which was distributed during the Assembly bombing, Singh wrote:
"It is easy to kill individuals but you cannot kill the ideas. Great empires crumbled while the ideas survived."
