Antonga (Black Hawk) leds raid on mormon settlers at Manti Utah Pioneer monument
Antonga (Black Hawk) a Timpanogos war chief led a raid against Mormon settlers. Although they simply drove off a cattle herd which encroached on their lands, this raid was the beginning of Black Hawk's War which would last from 1865 to 1872 with ~150 battles, skirmishes and raids. He led united forces of Timpanogos and allied bands of Paiute and Navajo (Dine). The forces they fought against were white militias made up of Mormons such as the Nauvoo Legion. They asked the Federal Government for support but in the aftermath of the Civil War, the government did not send troops to assist. The resistance against Mormon settlement was successful in hindering their expansion and some Mormon settlements were given up altogether. By 1866 Brigham Young advised the people of the small settlements and scattered ranches to abandon them and move into communities of not less than 150 families. Before the end of the war 28 communities had been abandoned.
