From WCH:On 11 March 1845, the battle of Kororāreka took place in Aotearoa (New Zealand) when Māori rebels defeated British forces and seized the town (now called Russell) during the Northern war. Some of the Ngāpuhi people were unhappy with growing British colonial authority in the area, which was exemplified when the British Union Jack flag replaced the flag of the Māori United Tribes flag flying over Kororāreka. Several hundred Māori fighters attacked the town, which was defended by British troops and armed settlers. A unit of fighters took control of the blockhouse housing the flagstaff, and chopped it down. The rebels then began looting and burning the town, causing damages of £5000 (over $6 million in 2017 value). In the wake of the incident, some white settlers sold their land and fled.
