Two Catholic church buildings in British Columbia were destroyed in fires: Sacred Heart Mission Church of Penticton and St. Gregory Mission Church on Osoyoos land
In response to the coming to light of child graves at Residential Schools in Canada, the rate of arson attacks on Catholic churches spiked from 2021 forward. These two churches burned on the same night. Royal Canadian Mounted Police sergeant Jason Bayda said that the fires being at "four churches, all Catholic, all on indigenous land, that in itself is extremely suspicious." No one has been charged. A recent report from the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, citing data tabled by the government in the House of Commons, found 238 arson attacks on churches and other religious institutions between 2021 and 2023 — up from 152 in the prior three-year period.
