On 26 February 2023, Cofán Indigenous land defender Eduardo Mendúa was assassinated in the garden of his home in Dureno, Ecuador. He was shot 12 times by two hooded, armed men. His murder is suspected of being linked to the local Cofán people's struggle against expanded oil drilling by the state-owned firm, Petroecuador. He was described by friends on his Facebook as an "excellent leader", and a "tireless… warrior and fighter," who gave his life for "all the peoples and nationalities of Ecuador".
