Martinican writer, teacher, scholar, anti-colonial and feminist activist, and Surrealist. She co-founded the Martinique cultural journal Tropiques, of which she was also an editor, along with Aimé Césaire (spouse), and René Ménil. As a theorist she was influention in the development of Négritude and Surrealism, as well as more general Afro-Caribbean anti-colonial thought.
