Aŋpétu Wašté Wiŋ was born on this day in 1889 on the South Dakota Yankton Indian Reservation, and raised on Pine Ridge. She was an ethnographer, linguist, and writer known for her important work recording oral histories and documenting the Dakota language. She is also known for working with Franz Boas and from the Akta Lakota Museum: "Deloria did her own research as well, interviewing tribal elders, writing Dakota grammar books, translating ceremonial texts, writing the novel ‘Waterlily,’ and conducting studies for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in regards to the Lumbee of Robeson county and socio-economic challenges on the Navajo Reservation."
