Dade Battle (Seminole Wars)
Dec. 28, 1835
Os-ce-o-lá, The Black Drink, a Warrior of Great Distinction 1838 by George Catlin
Considered the battle that sparked the Second Seminole War, it was a decisive defeat for American forces. A force of ~180 Seminole and Afro-Seminole/Maroon warriors attacked two US Army companies, killing all but 2 soldiers and 1 guide. Major Francis L Dade was killed in the Seminoles' very first shot fired personally by Chief Micanopy, which by pre-arranged plan began the attack. Also of significance is on the same day, Osceola killed oppressive Indian Agent Wiley Thompson. Wiley Thompson was appointed Indian Agent of the Seminoles in 1834 specifically to oversee their removal from Florida. Although physically separated these two events are considered together to be the beginning of the Second Seminole War.
