Dutch explorers killed by Maori during first expedition to reach Aotearoa
Dec. 19, 1642
Golden Bay and Farewell Spit from the air
After being likely the first Europeans to sight Aotearoa, on December 13th, Abel Tasman and crew are attacked while at anchor off Mohua, or Golden Bay. Members of Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri made this first known contact between Europeans and Māori. After the Dutch ship sounded trumpets and a cannon at the Māori, four Dutch men were killed. Abel Tasman raised anchor and they left. Māori would not be bothered much again by explorers for about 125 when James Cook arrived.
