Sid Mills is a Yakama and Cherokee person and lifelong fighter for Indigenous sovereignty. A Vietnam war veteran and Purple Heart recipient, he returned to Washington State and was intimately involved in the Fish Wars in which he was arrested many times. Sid was married to Suzette Bridges (Puyallup) who was deeply involved in the Fish Wars and served on the board of the WaHeLut Indian School. Sid was at the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz, the 1972 Trail of Broken Treaties and BIA occupation as well as the 1973 AIM Liberation/Occupation of Wounded Knee. Back home in Washington, besides the fish wars he also assisted in the successful occupation/reclamation of the Cushman Indian Hospital/Cascadia Juvenile Center in 1976, and the successful occupation of Fort Lawton in 1970 which led to the establishment of Daybreak Star Cultural Center. Sid continues to be involved in Indigenous sovereignty movements in the area as well as a spiritual leader with the Native American Church. He was threatened with arrest as recently at 2013 for establishing a traditional culture camp in a huckleberry picking area known as Meadow Creek.
