Ahead of President Trump's planned rally at Mount Rushmore celebrating the Fourth of July, protesters blockaded the main road to the monument. The protesters shut down the road leading to the event grounds for four hours by placing three vans in the road and removing the tires. A multi-generational gathering, led by many young women and including different tribes, peacefully held the line. They were supported by some Black Lives Matter protesters. They were pepper sprayed by the police and National Guard and were met with degrading comments Trump supporters.

The delegation inlcuded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Chief qiyəplenəxʷ, (Capilano), Quwʼutsun (Cowichan) Chief Charley Isipaymilt and Secwepemc (formerly Shuswap) Chief Basil David. Simon Pierre, a young Katzie man from the Coquitlam Reserve, came as interpreter. They sought to address issues related to land claims, governmental regulations on fishing and hunting, and the banning of the potlatch. The delegation first travelled across Canada to Ottawa where they met Superintendent General of Indian Affairs, Frank Oliver, and presented him with a written address for Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier, describing the many injustices faced by Indigenous nations across Canada. From Ottawa they sent a letter back home saying “Every station we come to Indians are there waiting for us, bidding us goodbye and handshaking us, and wishing us good luck.” By July 21 they made it to the Atlantic and departed for England. On August 13, the delegation had a fifteen minute audience with King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace. They presented three woven baskets to Queen Alexandra, one basket containing a picture of the son and daughter of Chief Capilano. Although the King did next to nothing to assist the Indigenous peoples of BC, the great effort put forth by these leaders on behalf of their peoples is remembered today. Chief qiyəplenəxʷ never abandoned his mission to obtain justice and respect for his people.

This treaty council established Fort Hall Shoshone Bannock reservation (Pohoko’ikkatee) in Idaho near Pocatello. Historically significant because along with the terrible 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie (Lakota, Dakota, Arapaho), it was among the last treaties signed before the 1871 treaty prohibition. It established a reservation for the Shoshone and Bannock peoples and the Wind River Reservation. Prior to this treaty, some Shoshone people led by Tondzaosha (Pocatello) had led attacks against settlers in an attempt to get them to leave their territory. In particular, Shoshone people were affected by gold and silver rushes as well as Mormom incursions into their territory after the founding of Salt Lake City in 1847. Shoshone also suffered a massacre at Bear River on January 29, 1863, the largest mass murder of Native Americans by the US military with one estimate being 493 people killed. Some residents of Fort Hall went on to fight in what became known as the Bannock war.

Combined Haudenosaunee and British forces defeated American forces in battle in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War. American forces suffered 302 killed, while Haudenosaunee and British forces suffered only three, due to the Haudenosaunee successfully flanking the Americans.
