Another resounding win for Nimíipuu forces during the Nez Perce war. While trying to catch non-treaty Native people who were resisting forced imprisonment on reservations, US Army Captain Stephen Whipple sent out two scouts who encountered Nimíipuu warrior Seeyakoon Ilppilp who was standing guard near the Native camp. He killed one and the other ran back to alert the army of the nearby Nez Perce camp. Whipple sent out Lieutenant Sevier Rains with ten soldiers and two civilians to investigate. Warriors led by Wahchumyus (Rainbow) and Pahkatos Owyeen (Five Wounds) met the army and killed all thirteen. When Whipple arrived he dug in with his troops and the Nez Perce undertook to bypass them, having fourteen young men to keep the soldiers pinned down in the rifle pits. Screened by warriors, the remainder of the Nez Perce and their livestock passed by a mile away heading eastward.
