Vern Harper, ᐊᓯᓂ was a Cree Elder, medicine man, Indigenous rights activist, veteran and boxer from Tkaranto (Toronto). Orphaned at a young age, he was separated from his family and culture and put into a white foster home. As a teenager he ran away and returned to his mothers community, Mistawasis in Saskatchewan where he reconnected and learned the Cree language. After spending time in the army and serving in Korea, he returned to Tkaranto where he began a career as a light heavyweight professional boxer. Known as Hurricane Harper, he lost only 7 matches out of 61. Harper became sober in 1972, and became a leader of the American Indian Movement in Toronto, and served as vice-president of the Ontario Métis and Non-Status Indian Association. With his partner at the time, Pauline Shirt (Cree) they organized the Native Peoples Caravan in 1974 from Vancouver to Ottawa to address grievances. In 1976, Harper and his then-wife Pauline Shirt founded the Wandering Spirit Survival School in Toronto. Now known as the Kapapamahchakwew - Wandering Spirit School, its objective is still to empower Indigenous youth with knowledge about their cultures, traditions and languages. Named the Cree war chief, Pauline found out later she was actually related to. Harper was also one of the first Elders to have chaplain status as recognized by the Correctional Service of Canada. In jails, Harper provided spiritual services, sweat lodge ceremonies and traditional counselling to Indigenous and non-Indigenous inmates. Harper also counselled Indigenous youth offenders, acting as a youth court worker with the Aboriginal Legal Services in Toronto. He was deeply concerned with the rehabilitation of Indigenous men and women, seeking to keep Indigenous youth out of prison. Canadian Encyclopedia writes "Lakota Elder Henry Crow Dog, a leader of the American Indian Movement in the late 1960s, and his son Chief Leonard Crow Dog, bestowed upon Harper the holy title of Heyoka — a person who brings the power of humour and of opposites into challenging situations in order to bring about healing and restoration. Harper is said to be the first non-Lakota person to be given this honour."

In June of 1876 General Crook's column was marching northward in what is now Wyoming with the intent to find the resisting Lakota and Cheyennes and force them onto the reservation. Crook's force, called the Bighorn and Yellowstone Expedition, consisted of 993 cavalry and mule-mounted infantry, 197 civilian packers and teamsters, 65 Montana miners, three scouts, and five journalists. They were intending to meet up with Custer's force. On June 17th the US Army was resting when Tȟašúŋke Witkó (Crazy Horse) and ~1,000–1,800 warriors engaged them. The battle which ensued would last for six hours and consist of disconnected actions and charges and counter-charges by Crook and Crazy Horse, the two forces spread out over a fluid front three miles wide. The Cheyenne name for the battle comes from something which occurred during an attempted US Cavalry advance led by Captain Anson Mills. A Cheyenne warrior, Comes in Sight, had his horse shot. While fleeing on foot from Mills' advancing soldiers, his sister Buffalo Calf Road Woman (Mutsimiuna) rode to his rescue. Comes in Sight jumped onto her horse and the two successfully escaped. Mills was impressed with the swarming Indians at his front. "They were the best cavalry soldiers on earth. In charging up toward us they exposed little of their person, hanging on with one arm around the neck and one leg over the horse, firing and lancing from underneath the horses' necks, so that there was no part of the Indian at which we could aim." This battle is considered one of the main reasons for the Lakota and Cheyenne's decisive win at the Battle of Greasy Grass one week later. It greatly delayed General Crook's column who may have otherwise been present with Custer. Between 10,000 and 25,000 rounds of 45-70 caliber rifle and carbine ammunition were expended by the US Army during a half day's fight with only a dozen or so enemy casualties.

The St. Joseph Mutiny was a mutiny which occurred in June 1837 among the 1st West India Regiment of the British Army. It was led by recently arrived Africans who had been "liberated" from illegal slave ships by the Royal Navy and subsequently conscripted into the West India Regiments. Between 60 and 100 soldiers in the regiment participated in the mutiny, seizing arms and ammunition, killing one enlisted soldier and setting fire to the officers' quarters. Although ultimately unsuccessful, one of the leaders, Dâaga became a folk hero in Trinidad and Tobago, with one report saying in the 1920s a week-long festival was dedicated to the memory of Dâaga and the mutiny. Trindadian leader of the 1970 Black Power Revolution in Trinidad and Tobago took the name Makandal Daaga after Dâaga and Haitian rebel and maroon François Mackandal.

On December 25, 1526, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor granted Pánfilo de Narváez a license to claim what is now the Gulf Coast of Mexico for the Kingdom of Spain. His intent was to claim Florida for Spain and establish colonies. The colonial expedition was a massive disaster, with desertations, storms, disease, starvation, and hostilities from the Indigenous peoples they were stealing from among their many tribulations. Only four of the expedition's original members survived, reaching Mexico City in 1536. The animosity caused by the Narvaez expedition was such that it took the Spanish years to establish a settlement in Florida. Narvaez has gone down in history as one of the most ruthless yet incompetent conquistadors of the colonial era. Although not remembered by name or with much detail, we celebrate the Native people who resisted this early attempt at colonization in the Americas today.
