On this day in 1976, the Soweto uprising began in part in response to a new policy of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in schools. South Africa History Online points out that the basis for the uprising goes back at least to the passage of the Bantu Education Act introduced by the Apartheid government in 1953. Dr Verwoerd, who engineered the Bantu Education Act, announced that “Natives (blacks) must be taught from an early age that equality with Europeans (whites) is not for them”. Further, SA reports the government was spending far more on White education than on Black education; R644 was spent annually for each White student, while only R42 was budgeted for a Black school child. On the day of the uprising, Action Committee of the Soweto Students Representative Council (SSRC), leaders of the original march, mainly came from two high schools, Naledi High in Naledi and Morris Isaacson in Mofolo. By the end of the day, an estimated 20,000 students took part in the protests which turned to generalized riots. The police fired teargas and live ammunition on demonstrating students with extreme brutality. The official count is that 176 protesters were killed, but actual estimates are much higher. June 16 is now a public holiday in South Africa, Youth Day in remembrance.

Goyaałé was a military leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Ndendahe Apache people. Following the end of the Mexican-American war in 1848, Americans continued to encroach on Apache lands and attempted to confine the people on reservations. Geronimo led multiple escapes from the reservation with acts of resistance that enabled his people to continue their traditional ways of life for many years. In the final US Army campaign against Geronimo, it took more than 5,000 U.S. Army Cavalry soldiers, to subdue no more than 70 (only 38 by the end) Chiricahua Apache who fled the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation.

Brother to Tecumseh and often referred to as 'The Prophet', Tenskwatawa was an important Shawnee spiritual leader who helped form Tecumseh's confederacy. A widespread confederacy formed to oppose US colonial expansion past the Ohio River, Tenskwatawa called for his followers to reject European habits such as alcohol consumption and called for a return to traditional ways of life. As Tenskwatawa grew more influential and his movement gained momentum, Indiana territorial governor William Henry Harrison wrote a letter to the Lenape (Delawares) which he also published in a newspaper specifically challenging Tenskwatawa to 'cause the sun to stand still or the dead to rise from their graves'. Tenswkatawa then correctly predicted the eclipse which humiliated the virulently racist and pro-slavery Harrison and won even more support to his side.
