The western half of the island of Papua was administered as the colony of Dutch New Guinea from 1828 until 1945. The eastern half of the country was administered by various colonial powers including both Britian and Germany prior to WWI, then Australia controlling the full eastern half following WWI. Following Indonesia's independence from the Netherlands in 1949, West Papuans have continued to organize for their independence and self determination. In 1969, a controversial plebiscite held between 14 July and 2 August 1969 in which 1,025 people (out of a population of ~800,000) hand-selected by the Indonesian military in Western New Guinea voted unanimously in favor of Indonesian control. Ironically called the 'Act of Free Choice", it is often referred to as the "Act of No Choice". The same year, Ortiz-Sanz's UN team estimated that 95% of the Papuans supported independence.
While Papuan's have been resisting colonialism for hundreds of years, the OPM or Free Papua Movement has been fighting since 1 December 1963 to the current day. One of the main elements of colonialism in West Papua today is Freeport-McMoRan, an American mining company based in Texas which operates the Grasberg mine, the world's largest gold mine. The mine made $4.1billion in operating profit on revenue of $6.4billion in 2010.
Following a press release to Freeport Indonesia on February 18th, at 22:00 that night several unidentified people cut Freeport's slurry and fuel pipelines by hacksaw, causing "a substantial loss of slurry, containing copper, silver and gold ores and diesel fuel." Additionally, the saboteurs set fire along the breaks in the fuel line, and shot at police that tried to approach the fires. On 14 April of that same year, OPM insurgents cut more pipelines, slashed electric wires, vandalised plumbing, and burned equipment tyres. Repair crews were attacked by OPM gunfire as they approached the sites of the damage, so Freeport requested police and military assistance.
It remains illegal in Indonesia to raise the Morning Star flag or speak about West Papuan independence.
