At the invitation of the Western Shoshone Tribe and Corbin Harney, an anti-nuclear activist and spiritual leader for the Newe people, ~3,000 protesters from 12 different countries gathered for "Healing Global Wounds". They planned actions and demonstrations, eventually using culverts and other means to enter the Test Site where 530 were arrested by Wackenhut Security forces on charges of trespassing. Demonstrators included representatives of indigenous people from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhastan, one of two places used for nuclear testing in the former Soviet Union. Demonstrators also included surivors of nuclear bombs dropped on Japan during World War II and U.S. veterans who were exposed to atomic fallout while in the military. The protesters came at the invitation of the Western Shoshone National Council, who last year issued a worldwide plea for help in putting a stop to nuclear testing on Indian lands. Shoshone leaders are concerned because the cancer rate among their tribe living at the site is 42 percent higher than the national average. Full-scale nuclear weapons testing did not resume.

On this day in 1932, Dick Gregory was born in St. Louis, Missouri. A successful comedian who broke many barriers for Black comedians, he used his platform and influence to raise awareness on political issues from civil rights to Native sovereignty. He was an ally and friend of Medgar Evers and of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who described his contributions to the civil rights struggle as “so dedicated and significant” that the movement would “always remain indebted to [him].” Gregory also toured to raise funds for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s 1964 Freedom Summer and participated in a 1965 freedom rally on the last night of the Selma to Montgomery March. He was influential in the struggle against the Vietnam war and remembered as a celebrity who not only put his money and reputation on the line, but put his body on the line, being arrested many times alongside the people he struggled with. In 1966 he was arrested for assisting the Nisqually in asserting their treaty rights to fish, for which he was sentenced to 6 months unlike another celebrity, Marlon Brando. Although best remembered for his civil rights work, Gregory understood intersectionality and put himself on the line for myriad causes including anti-nuclear work, against Apartheid South Africa, and prison reform. He was married for more than 50 years and had 10 children.

An early part of the Northwest Indian War, Colonel Benjamin Logan led the Kentucky militia on raids into Shawnee territory. Most warriors were away defending Miami villages from a separate colonial raiding force. Logan and his forces destroyed 13 Shawnee villages filled with mostly women and children. Hugh McGary who was a previously a pioneer with Daniel Boone illegally invading Kentucky, killed an important Shawnee leader, Moluntha, who was reported to be holding an American flag and his copy of the Treaty of Fort Finney, of which he was a signatory. McGary was court martialed and found guilty of murding Moluntha for which he received only one years suspension from the militia. While the Shawnee traditionally were autonomous villages with no central government, after contact they began selecting a ceremonial leader to communicate with colonial forces. Moluntha was the ceremonial leader at this time, succeeding Hokoleskwa (Cornstalk). Logan's raid was an important early part of the Northwest Indian War and had the effect of increasing hostilities as well as the Shawnee's strengthening their ties to the Miami's who helped them after the raid. Tecumseh would go on to site Moluntha's murder as one reason not to trust Americans.
